Iran declared on Monday it would cease all communication with the United States unless Israel terminates its intensifying military offensive in southern Lebanon. This statement came via the semi-official Iranian news agency, Tasnim. The agency highlighted that the ongoing actions of the ‘Zionist regime’ in Lebanon, alongside the breach of ceasefire agreements, led to the Iranian negotiating team halting ‘talks and exchange of texts through a mediator.’
Iran is calling for a halt to the ‘aggressive and brutal operations’ in Gaza and Lebanon and demands Israel’s complete military withdrawal from occupied areas in Lebanon. As of yet, there is no confirmation from high-ranking Iranian officials about the suspension of diplomatic messages, which are primarily communicated through Pakistani mediation.
The announcement from Iran followed an Israeli military warning to Beirut’s southern district of Dahiyeh, which is a stronghold of Hezbollah, a militia supported by Iran. Residents were advised to evacuate in anticipation of planned airstrikes. Despite the warnings, the attacks had not yet transpired hours later.
Amid these developments, President Trump shared on Truth Social that he had engaged in productive conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and also, through intermediaries, with Hezbollah leadership. He claimed to have acquired commitments to halt the escalating hostilities that have undermined the ceasefire.
I had a very productive call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, and there will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back. Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop—That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel.
Further adding that ‘Talks are continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,’ there was no immediate Iranian reaction to Trump’s remarks. However, Netanyahu reiterated in a statement that Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon would proceed as planned.
Oil prices have surged due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amidst the conflict, impacting global markets. Prior to the hostilities initiated by the U.S. and Israel three months ago, this vital waterway facilitated 20% of the world’s oil supply. The blockade imposed by both countries has severely restricted this oil flow.
Trump, expressing optimism about negotiations earlier, posted on Truth Social claiming that ‘Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A.’ and encouraged patience by stating, ‘Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end – it always does!’
Previously, the U.S. and Iran had announced being close to extending a 60-day ceasefire with a framework to end the conflict, pending Trump’s approval.
In recent military activities, Israel has taken over large portions of southern Lebanon, leading to the displacement of over a million residents. The Israeli military has intensified airstrikes in Gaza, targeting Hamas militants following a major attack on Israel in October 2023. Civilian casualties have also been reported. From when the ceasefire was declared in October last year, Israeli forces controlled approximately 50% of Gaza. This occupation has since expanded to 60%, with Netanyahu indicating future advances to claim 70% of the territory.
