The New York Knicks extended their impressive winning streak with a victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of the NBA Finals. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 30 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns added 18 points and secured 12 rebounds. The Knicks managed to overcome a 14-point deficit in the second half, securing a 105-95 win on Wednesday night.
OG Anunoby contributed 17 points, helping New York achieve its 12th consecutive playoff win. This places them as the seventh team in NBA history to reach such a streak. Additionally, the Knicks became the first team to defeat San Antonio in a Game 1 of the finals. Previously, the Spurs had maintained a 6-0 record in these series openers. This marks the first time San Antonio has trailed in a final series before its conclusion.
Victor Wembanyama made a strong impact for the Spurs with 26 points and 12 rebounds, although he delivered a challenging shooting performance, hitting just six out of 21 field goal attempts in his finals debut. Stephon Castle scored 17 points, with Julian Champagnie and Dylan Harper each contributing 16 for the Spurs.
Game 2 is scheduled for Friday in San Antonio. The event was attended by former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, a staple presence at every finals game in Spurs history despite watching from a suite this time. Numerous Spurs legends, including David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Bruce Bowen, were also present. Knicks icons like Patrick Ewing were in attendance, as well as well-known fans such as Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Fat Joe, and Timothée Chalamet.
Many dedicated Knicks supporters made the journey to San Antonio. Among them was Tommy Sherlock, an auto sales manager from Brooklyn, who mentioned the costs for two Game 1 tickets, along with hotel and airfare, were lower than tickets for Game 3 in New York. He highlighted that even flying first class resulted in substantial savings.
The game dynamics were intense with the Knicks initially leading 14-7. The Spurs countered with a 20-13 run, taking a 10-point lead. Despite back-and-forth plays in the second quarter, San Antonio managed a 55-48 lead at halftime. Midway through the third quarter, the Spurs extended their lead to 14. However, a strong Knicks response followed, resulting in a 22-9 run and a tie at 76 entering the final period.
New York then gained an eight-point advantage in the last period. Though Wembanyama’s free throws put the Spurs ahead 95-94 with just over two minutes remaining, Brunson’s timely three-pointer in the next possession secured the lead for the Knicks.
The Spurs had never trailed in a final series before, although they faced ties during past encounters, including against New Jersey in 2003, Detroit in 2005, and Miami in 2013 and 2014. The 2013 series against Miami extended to seven games, but the Spurs only fell behind when it concluded.
