Escalation in Gaza: Recent Strikes and Casualties

1 day ago 0

Recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least nine Palestinians overnight, according to reports from local hospitals. These incidents occurred as much of the global focus remained on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Shifa Hospital, which received the casualties, reported that the fatalities included two women and two children among the nine victims. The strikes were carried out in at least four separate incidents in Gaza City.

Video footage from one of the locations revealed a substantial hole in the upper floor of a residential building. The impact blew through interior walls and spread personal items, some blood-stained, across the room and onto the street below.

During a funeral held for the victims in Gaza City, relatives mourned the loss. “They say the war has stopped, but the war has not stopped,” stated Walid Shbeir, whose nephew was among the deceased. “Every night there is killing, and we have martyrs. This continuous killing happens morning, evening, and night.” The Israeli military has yet to release a statement regarding these recent strikes.

The current casualties add to the death toll since the October ceasefire intended to halt a prolonged conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Despite reduced intensity, the fragile ceasefire has been marked by regular Israeli attacks.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which holds credibility with United Nations agencies and independent experts, over 936 Palestinians have lost their lives since the truce. The Ministry does not distinguish between civilian and militant deaths in its statistics.

Militants have also executed attacks against Israeli troops. Israel asserts its strikes respond to breaches of the truce or threats to its personnel. Four Israeli soldiers have perished in Gaza after the ceasefire began.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza was a reaction to a Hamas attack in October 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken.
