President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine recently published an open letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir V. Putin. The letter surfaced following a series of Ukrainian drone strikes deep within Russian territory and notable changes in Ukraine’s favor on the battlefield.
In his message, Zelensky proposed resuming peace discussions while challenging Putin over recent wartime setbacks. He highlighted issues such as inflation and Russia’s reliance on China, alongside commenting on Putin’s age as a factor in these difficulties.
Zelensky has previously directed video statements at Putin or the Russian populace, notably since the onset of Moscow’s invasion in 2022. This latest communication ranks among his most direct and critical messages.
He pointed out that Putin has spent roughly half of his 26-year leadership period involved in conflicts with Ukraine. This includes the military operations in eastern Ukraine that started in 2014 and the extensive invasion initiated in 2022.
Offering a cease-fire, Zelensky expressed a willingness to meet for direct negotiations outside the previous framework established during the Trump administration. That process, directed by real estate investor Steve Witkoff and former U.S. presidential adviser Jared Kushner, stalled due to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran beginning in February.
Zelensky recommended involving European nations and organizing a summit in Switzerland, Turkey, or within an Arab country. He has suggested direct meetings with Putin before, though they have not materialized.
