The New York Knicks made a significant comeback to win Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals. They overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 on Monday.
Despite this loss, the Spurs are heavily favored to balance the series. As of Friday at 12:45 p.m. ET, the odds at FanDuel show the Spurs with a -225 moneyline. They are also listed as -6.5 (-106) favorites on a total of 215.5.
While betting on the Knicks +6 is tempting, given my earlier support for New York to win the title (+170) and by at least 1.5 games (+270), I will not back the Spurs as favorites in any game this series.
Karl-Anthony Towns Reflects on Game 1
Karl-Anthony Towns credited his late mother for his calm during the thrilling Game 1 of the NBA Finals. His performance was crucial alongside Mitchell Robinson, who effectively defended Victor Wembanyama.
A Closer Look at Game 2 Predictions
Historically, betting on the home favorite in Game 2 after losing the opener is profitable, which makes betting the Knicks less appealing. That said, I’m inclined to focus on the total score and bet the UNDER 215.5 for Game 2, adjustable down to +212.
Game 1 results can lead to predictions betting the Over in Game 2. However, although the series opener moved quickly, it ended well under the 217.5 total. The strong defenses by both teams contributed to this result more than poor shooting did.
Key Defensive Performances
San Antonio’s defense was effective against Jalen Brunson, while New York’s bigs, Towns and Robinson, kept Wembanyama in check. The Knicks’ defensive prowess, with players like Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart, stifled key Spurs players. This defensive strength suggests more low-scoring games going forward.
The narrative is similar for San Antonio wing Stephon Castle and Julian Champagnie, who traded assignments defending Brunson.
Game Strategy Insights
“Rock-fights” over “shootouts” as the series progresses.
The Spurs should slow the pace as their offense might falter in a shootout against the Knicks. New York benefits from a strong half-court game, emphasizing sound defensive strategies.
Turnover and Rebounding Impact
Low turnover rates and high defensive rebounding rates for both teams should minimize easy points like turnovers and second-chance scoring, adding value to betting the Under.
While I’m waiting until closer to game time to commit to betting the Under, there’s a chance the total may rise with public inclination toward Overs in such high-stakes games.
Prediction: Knicks 107, Spurs 104
For a player prop bet, consider taking the UNDER 16.5 points for Spurs wing Stephon Castle.
