Trump Rules Out Bill Pulte as Permanent Director of National Intelligence

3 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump announced that Bill Pulte, the current pick for acting director of national intelligence, would not be his permanent choice for the role. The decision followed bipartisan opposition due to Pulte’s lack of experience in national security. The position requires Senate confirmation, which lawmakers indicated was unlikely with Pulte as the nominee.

During an Oval Office session, Trump described Pulte as a ‘very smart guy’ but noted that Pulte would not want the position permanently. Trump mentioned looking into past elections that he claimed were ‘rigged’ without credible evidence. Various candidates are being considered for the role, according to Trump.

Pulte is the grandson of the founder of PulteGroup and has been a controversial figure within the administration. He served as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. His tenure saw him pursuing perceived political rivals for mortgage fraud and criticizing former Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell for not reducing interest rates.

The proposed 50-year mortgage by Pulte was unpopular as it could slow wealth accumulation through home ownership. Senators from both parties expressed concerns over Pulte’s appointment to manage national and foreign security coordination across 18 federal agencies.

Trump’s initial national intelligence director, Tulsi Gabbard, resigned due to her husband’s cancer diagnosis. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Republican senators emphasized the need for experienced professionals in the director’s role. Democratic senators viewed Pulte’s temporary appointment as risky, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren urging Trump to rescind the offer. Warren feared misuse of sensitive national information and potential promotion of election denial theories.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed tensions with Pulte, reflecting divisiveness within the administration. Despite controversy, Pulte maintains a close relationship with Trump, often traveling with him on Air Force One. Trump praised him for his high integrity.
