Trump Aims to Reduce National Intelligence Office Size

3 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump expressed his desire for the new acting director of national intelligence, Bill Pulte, to further reduce the size of the office. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump highlighted that the office’s size has been excessive for too long, emphasizing Pulte’s capability to perform the task efficiently.

During a flight to Wisconsin for an agricultural event, Trump praised Pulte as someone who would manage the office closely and effectively. Pulte, previously head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, lacks obvious national security expertise. However, Trump has directed him to initiate staff reductions, particularly targeting those who served under Democratic administrations.

In a Wall Street Journal interview, Trump reiterated his plans for Pulte to begin removing personnel, with expectations for the future permanent director to continue this effort. While Trump noted the potential benefit of Pulte making initial changes, he has not formally nominated him for the director position.

Pulte’s appointment has stirred bipartisan opposition in the Senate, affecting the renewal of a critical national security surveillance program. Democrats have expressed distrust in Pulte’s ability to oversee the program. Despite this resistance, Trump mentioned that Pulte could remain in the position until a successor is confirmed. He is considering five candidates for the permanent role but did not disclose their identities.

Pulte’s temporary role follows measures initiated by Tulsi Gabbard, the previous director, who had already started scaling back the office. The administration had announced a significant budget reduction and workforce cut under Gabbard’s tenure, citing inefficiency and bloating. Gabbard resigned recently after publicizing her husband’s cancer diagnosis.
