Challenges Loom for Graham Platner in Maine Senate Race

The competition between Democratic challenger Graham Platner and Republican incumbent Susan Collins in Maine’s Senate race is intense. Recent polling suggests Platner’s chances of surpassing Collins are diminishing due to various controversies, according to data gathered by Tony Fabrizio, David Lee, and Travis Tunis for the Collins-supporting Pine Tree Results PAC. The poll, conducted from June 1 to 3, indicates that Platner and Collins are evenly matched, each securing 46 percent of the vote. Favorability for Platner increased slightly from 35 percent to 40 percent between January and June. However, his unfavorability also rose significantly, going from 29 percent to 49 percent. The memo notes that Platner’s image suffered due to a notable rise in negative perceptions.

In the previous January poll, Platner received 44 percent compared to Collins’ 45 percent. Although the race remains tight, further negative revelations could harm Platner’s support, as highlighted by President Donald Trump’s pollster. Nearly 60 percent of voters indicated they are less likely to support Platner if aware of his activity on a controversial social media platform, Kik, which has been criticized by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.

The poll memo states that the Senate race remains ‘HIGHLY competitive,’ with rising controversies potentially weakening Platner’s standing.

Collins and her allies are advised by the pollster to maintain pressure on Platner, given the Democratic fundraising efforts to bolster his campaign. The pollster’s assessment received agreement from outside observers, as betting platforms show Platner’s chance of victory is now at its lowest since the race began.

Controversies Impacting Platner

Platner, originally an oyster farmer and Marine Corps veteran from Maine, commenced his campaign in August 2025. Despite his progressive stance, advocating for policies like housing affordability and healthcare reform, his campaign has stumbled due to several controversies.

In October 2025, past Reddit posts of Platner using offensive language and rhetoric were brought back to public focus. Platner apologized for these posts, which were deleted before his campaign began, asserting they no longer represent him. That same month, he addressed scrutiny over a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery, apologizing and covering it up after claiming ignorance of its associations.

Sexually Explicit Messages

In May, reports surfaced about Platner sending sexually explicit messages to numerous women while married, initially dismissed by his campaign as rumors. He later expressed regret and mentioned his efforts to reconcile with his wife. Recently, the New York Times reported disturbing behavior claims from women who dated Platner. He denies allegations of physical threats, citing political motives behind the accusations.

Platner emphasized in interviews that these stories aim to deflect attention from policy issues like healthcare and political spending. Recognizing his struggles with PTSD and past alcohol use, Platner admitted his past imperfections and highlighted his commitment to improving since then.

Election Prospects

With the primary election approaching on June 9, Platner is unlikely to withdraw. Winning is critical for the Democratic Party’s Senate control prospects in November.

Polls show mixed outcomes; UMass Lowell’s recent survey indicates Platner leads with 48 percent compared to Collins’ 43 percent, with 6 percent undecided. The contentious nature of the race remains evident, with both candidates facing significant challenges.
