How a Beach Town Burger Stand Maintains Low Prices Over 20 Years

2 weeks ago 0

A small burger stand in Blackpool, England maintains its signature burger price just above $1 for almost 20 years, despite rising food and energy costs. Chris Higgitt opened Higgitt’s Las Vegas Arcade Blackpool & £1 Burger Bar in 2006, offering a burger priced at £1, equivalent to about $1.34.

The burger includes a bun, an English beef patty, onions, and sauce. This low price attracts long lines of customers during the tourist season. Higgitt, 58, expressed pride in maintaining the price, stating it remains popular, with people willing to wait more than an hour.

Origin and Growth of the Business

Before entering the burger business, Higgitt worked as a processing and quality engineer and later operated a bed-and-breakfast with his wife, Karen. After acquiring an arcade in 2006 that struggled, they decided to open a burger bar after discussing potential ventures. Calculations showed they could sell the burgers for £1, turning the side business into their main income source. Today, 90% of the couple’s revenue comes from this venture, which operates daily from March through November.

Strategies for Maintaining Low Prices

To keep prices low, Higgitt relies on efficiency, bulk purchasing, and social media exposure. He estimates each burger costs about 50 pence, approximately 68 cents, including ingredients and electricity. Buying ingredients in bulk and ensuring a steady customer flow is essential.

Social media plays a vital role in attracting customers. Videos from TikTok creators and YouTubers draw new visitors looking to try what many call Britain’s cheapest burger. Higgitt encourages food YouTubers and TikTokers to record their experiences, bringing in more people eager to sample the burger or simply visit the lively spot.

Besides burgers, Higgitt offers other items like hot dogs, Spam sandwiches, and sausage sandwiches.
