Republicans and Democrats will compete in the annual Congressional Baseball Game this week. The Democrats are aiming to end a five-year losing streak, with the Republican team managed by Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas). Williams emphasizes the importance of pitching, saying, “It’s all about throwing strikes. If you throw strikes, you usually win, and we’ve got guys that can do that.”

Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.), managing the Democratic team, is aware of the challenge. She mentioned, “We’ve had a thin bullpen.” With Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) back, the Democrats hope for improved performance. Sánchez noted that team members are putting in extra work to enhance their hitting, aiming for a high-scoring game.

Both parties view the game, held at Nationals Park, as a highlight event, attracting lawmakers, lobbyists, and aides. Event organizers expect over 30,000 attendees, with significant funds raised for charities like the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

Founded in 1909, the game has historic significance, especially after the 2017 shooting incident at a Republican practice that injured several including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.). Notable performances include former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) and Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), among others.

The potential arrival of Mark Teixeira, a former Major League Baseball player running for Congress, is generating buzz. Teixeira, known for his impressive MLB career, noted he hasn’t played in a decade and anticipates needing to adjust to the game again if elected.

On legislative matters, the Senate is progressing with the Protect College Sports Act, endorsed by President Trump. Additionally, UFC Freedom 250 will be hosted at the White House, with discussions around the possibility of leaving the new octagon permanently in place.

The House Judiciary Committee will review the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, taking streaming into account. NFL’s media dealings are under scrutiny, with Roger Goodell declining to testify amid ongoing litigation.
