A 17-year-old British high school student, Alexander Browder, has been sanctioned by Russia. This action marks him as one of the youngest individuals to face such measures. Browder believes his work unsettling Moscow led to these sanctions.
Alexander, son of anti-corruption advocate Bill Browder, reported in March that Russia developed a ‘stablecoin.’ This cryptocurrency, linked to real assets, allegedly helped Russia circumvent sanctions by the U.S., U.K., and the EU. ‘My focus is on tracing financial flows,’ Browder explained to CBS News. The Kremlin’s move to sanction him indicates his investigation disturbed them, he added.
On June 2, Russia’s Foreign Ministry included Browder on a list forbidding entry into the nation. Moscow accused him of spreading false information. In response, Browder asserted that adding his name to a list would not alter the facts or his resolve.
Browder’s report detailed how the Russian stablecoin, A7A5, initiated in 2025, facilitated $100 billion in transactions last year via Kyrgyzstan-based exchanges. Browder’s dedication to uncovering corruption stems from family history. His father, Bill Browder, was sanctioned by Russia in 2005 after revealing a $230 million tax fraud scheme. Bill’s association with Russia began in the 1990s when he managed the Hermitage Fund—then the largest foreign investment fund in the country.
‘I pledged to my friend Sergei Magnitsky to seek justice for his death,’ Bill Browder stated in a 2022 interview. Magnitsky was a lawyer and ally who investigated the fraud before dying in a Russian jail in 2009.
Alexander Browder noted that while the fundamentals of fraud investigation persist, technology and skills have evolved. He acknowledged his father’s influence but regarded him as outdated regarding modern techniques. ‘Young individuals like me can grasp this area,’ he mentioned.
Alexander sees cryptocurrency as Russia’s new avenue for illicit activities. ‘These actions are not without victims,’ he remarked. The threats that accompany this type of work do not deter him. Browder stated, ‘Intimidation demands courage, not retreat. Exposing these issues is essential for justice.’
Despite his age, Alexander is aware of the dangers he faces by opposing the Russian state. He highlighted, ‘Violence and abductions are perpetual threats, yet I refuse to submit to fear.’ He aspires to contribute to halting violence worldwide, including in Ukraine, affected by Russian actions.
