The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks a significant expansion for the tournament. Spanning 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, this event sets a record with 104 matches over 39 days. Running from June 11 to July 19, it features an expanded format with 48 teams. FIFA president Gianni Infantino described it as “104 Super Bowls,” reflecting the scale of the event.
Soccer icon and former USMNT defender Alexi Lalas recently spoke on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, urging higher expectations for the U.S. team. “When it comes to this team, we should expect more than we ever have in the past,” Lalas stated. The current generation of players has had extensive support from a young age, leading to increased expectations. Lalas believes Americans should anticipate the team winning its group.
Team USA enters the tournament as the top seed in Group D. They face Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey. Their opening match against Paraguay takes place on June 12 at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) in Inglewood, California. Veteran defender Tim Ream serves as captain, while Christian Pulisic, boasting 84 caps and 32 goals, leads the lineup. The team blends 13 returnees from the 2022 World Cup with 13 newcomers. This roster stands as the fifth-youngest U.S. team in World Cup history.
According to analysts, topping Group D is a realistic goal for the U.S. Their likely toughest competition comes from Turkey, who previously defeated them in a friendly match. However, Team USA is favored in all group matches. Winning the group advances them to the new Round of 32 against a lesser-ranked team. This scenario would be unprecedented in U.S. men’s World Cup history.
Progressing past that stage brings them to the Round of 16. With home support and some luck, a historic run is possible. The team’s track record includes three group stage exits in five World Cups—a performance no longer acceptable. Given a favorable roster, home advantage, and a conducive tournament format, the primary obstacle to Team USA’s success might be themselves.
