Trump’s Endorsements and Upcoming South Carolina GOP Runoff

6 days ago 0

President Donald Trump’s influence in Republican primaries faces a new challenge in South Carolina. Although Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Trump’s endorsed candidate, secured one of the top two spots in the GOP gubernatorial primary, she will compete against South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson in a runoff election. The Associated Press reports that this runoff will determine who will succeed the term-limited GOP Governor Henry McMaster.

The primary saw no candidate achieving over 50% of the vote, necessitating a runoff on June 23. The victor is likely favored in the general election due to the state’s strong Republican leaning.

Throughout the month, Trump’s endorsement power appeared robust, helping candidates defeat incumbents in states such as Indiana and Texas. However, his support for Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s GOP governor race did not lead to victory. Zach Lahn, backed by MAHA and Turning Point USA, won the nomination instead.

In the South Carolina race, candidates emphasized their support for Trump’s agenda. After remaining neutral initially, Trump endorsed Evette, labeling her an ‘America First Patriot.’ He alluded to the possibility of her selecting Henry McMaster Jr., the current governor’s son, as a running mate, which stirred political speculation in the state.

Gov. Henry McMaster, who will be term-limited out of office, dismissed any notion of a political agreement for his son. Evette also stated plans to choose a running mate after the primary, noting that McMaster Jr. recently withdrew from consideration.

In the general election, the Republican nominee is expected to have an advantage. Democratic contenders include State Rep. Jermaine Johnson and trial attorney William Mullins McLeod Jr., among others.
