Conservative Leaders Push for Criminal Charges Against Women Seeking Abortions

Sentiment within the antiabortion movement is undergoing a shift as activists express concern about the increasing number of abortions occurring now compared to the period following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This frustration is particularly focused on the growing availability of abortion pills, even in states where abortion is banned.

Seth Gruber, an antiabortion activist leading ‘The White Rose Resistance,’ has initiated a petition aimed at rallying support for criminally charging women who obtain abortions. This petition has been circulating among other activists, marking a significant move in the antiabortion landscape.

For years, antiabortion efforts concentrated on prosecuting doctors and facilitators of abortion, while sparing women from punishment. However, the approach is changing as some conservative leaders see arresting women as the solution to halting abortions.

The fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was marked by a significant development. A group of over 60 conservative influencers, antiabortion leaders, and pastors signed a petition calling for the removal of ‘legal immunities’ safeguarding women who undergo abortions from legal consequences.

Earlier in the month, the Texas Republican Party’s state convention witnessed delegates voting in favor of repealing protective legal measures for women seeking abortions. This decision was reinforced by a strong voice vote on the convention floor.

Simultaneously, Texas’s largest antiabortion organization is exploring a targeted strategy. It aims to scrutinize women with medical licenses by proposing to revoke these licenses if they are caught using abortion pills. This approach seeks to assess the political viability of imposing penalties as a deterrent.
