Lady Gaga recently stirred a diverse range of responses online after a video emerged of her pausing a concert in Tokyo, Japan, to express her views on immigration enforcement practices by U.S. authorities. During her Mayhem Ball performance, the 39-year-old artist took a moment to address the audience about an issue she deeply cares about, particularly in the United States.
“I want to take a second to talk about something that is extremely important to me, something important to people all over the world, and especially in America right now,” Gaga stated. “In a couple of days, I’m going to be heading home, and my heart is aching thinking about the people, the children, the families all over America who are being mercilessly targeted by ICE. I’m thinking about all of their pain and how their lives are being destroyed right in front of us.”
Her comments come in the wake of recent scrutiny faced by ICE after incidents in Minneapolis where two individuals were shot and killed by its agents. Gaga continued, “I’m also thinking about Minnesota and everyone back at home who is living in so much fear and searching for answers on what we all should do. When entire communities lose their sense of safety and belonging, it breaks something in all of us.”
“I hope that you’ll all stand with us tonight. I know we’re not in America right now, but we are with our community, and we love you.”
During the concert, the “Poker Face” singer dedicated her song “Come to Mama” to those enduring hardship, stating, “We need to get back to a place of safety and peace and accountability. Good people shouldn’t have to fight so hard and risk their life for well-being and respect. And I hope our leaders are listening, I hope you are listening to us, asking you to change the course of action swiftly, and have mercy on everyone in our country.”
Despite receiving applause from the concertgoers, the reaction online was varied. Some criticized her, expressing that her political remarks were not appreciated during a concert. Comments ranged from “Could not care less,” to calling Gaga an “anti-American psycho.” Meanwhile, others supported her stance, with fans expressing admiration for her courage and her words, such as “i love her so much,” and being moved to tears by her speech.
Lady Gaga, known for her outspoken political views, has previously endorsed political figures like Kamala Harris and expressed her thoughts on the political climate in the United States. As a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community, Gaga uses her platform to champion various causes.
Gaga is expected to return to the U.S. soon, with a performance lined up at the upcoming Grammys.
