As SoFi Stadium gears up for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, concerns arise from workers regarding the accreditation process. SoFi is one of the selected venues in the USA for the event, hosting eight matches. However, nearly 2,000 workers represented by the UNITE HERE Local 11 union have issued a complaint to California’s attorney general. The complaint alleges potential risks of workers being targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to FIFA’s procedures.
FIFA’s process reportedly asks workers to share sensitive personal information, including their Social Security number, nationality, address, and country of birth. Consent for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data is also required. This requirement clashes with the California Consumer Privacy Act, according to the union.
SoFi stadium workers have protested outside the FIFA World Cup 26 Los Angeles office, calling for ICE to be banned from the World Cup.
The complaint urges FIFA to guarantee that ICE will not be present at venues throughout the tournament. The FBI has indicated that the Department of Homeland Security will be a crucial partner in the accreditation process. The workers have expressed concerns over having to choose between their livelihood and privacy rights under state law.
According to the complaint, FIFA’s procedures threaten the well-being of stadium workers, who play a vital role in delivering the World Cup experience. Despite the uncertainties surrounding ICE’s presence, acting director Todd Lyons mentioned ICE’s involvement in ensuring tournament security.
The World Cup at SoFi Stadium will feature eight games, including the U.S. opener against Paraguay on June 12. As preparations continue, the focus remains on addressing union concerns while gearing up for the event. SoFi Stadium is among the 16 venues selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
