The Indianapolis 500 witnessed a dramatic crash involving rookie Caio Collet on Sunday afternoon. As the race neared its conclusion, with Felix Rosenqvist and Pato O’Ward battling for the lead, Collet lost control in Turn 2 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Collet’s vehicle struck the wall after an overcorrection, causing the right rear to ignite as he skidded onto the grass. Emergency personnel promptly arrived to extinguish the flames and assist Collet in exiting the car. Despite the frightening incident, Collet walked away unharmed.
Track officials issued a red flag, pausing the race and allowing drivers a brief respite before a final showdown in the closing laps.
Making his debut at the Indy 500, Collet, driving for A.J. Foyt Racing, did not complete the race. After his second-place finish in the Indy NXT Series last year and securing three victories in 2025, Collet graduated to the NTT IndyCar Series.
The Brazilian entered the race with 70 points through six starts, positioned 21st in the IndyCar standings. His rookie season has yet to see a top 10 finish. The 2026 Indy 500 proved to be intensely competitive, with over 50 lead changes.
Felix Rosenqvist ultimately claimed victory on the final lap of the race.
