Ferrari has introduced Luce, its first all-electric vehicle. The reveal occurred on Monday, sparking discussions about its impact on the luxury electric vehicle (E.V.) market.
The Luce marks a significant step for Ferrari, renowned for its traditional sports cars. This five-seater model is seen as a bold move for the Italian automaker, which has dealt with a series of missed objectives and costly pledges to embrace electric technology.
Despite its weight, imposed by over half a ton of battery cells and electrical components, Ferrari engineers claim Luce possesses high-speed cornering capabilities. However, analysts question whether affluent buyers will invest over $500,000 in this electric model, which lacks the iconic design and engine sound typically associated with Ferrari.
“This represents a substantial investment for Ferrari, given the uncertain market demand,” stated Angus MacKenzie, MotorTrend’s international bureau chief. “There’s a certain level of apprehension.”
The development of Luce, which means “light” in Italian, is unique in Ferrari’s approximately 80 years of producing road cars. Collaborating with LoveFrom, a firm established by Jony Ive, Apple’s ex-design chief, and Marc Newson, Ferrari crafted Luce’s glass and polished aluminum frame. The vehicle is capable of achieving speeds nearing 200 miles per hour.
