In recent years, film and TV have often leaned towards flat lighting and dull cinematography. Boots Riley, the director known for the cult classic “Sorry to Bother You,” brings a vibrant alternative with his latest project, “I Love Boosters.” This film is an explosion of color used to enhance its narrative.
“I Love Boosters” centers on three women—played by Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie—engaged in shoplifting high-end fashion from big retail chains across the Bay Area. Their primary target is Metro Design stores, owned by Christie Smith, a billionaire fashion designer portrayed by Demi Moore.
The film adeptly shifts between live-action comedic elements inspired by “Looney Tunes” and serious social commentary. Riley manages this balance without causing a disjointed experience, creating a layered storyline that might require multiple viewings to fully comprehend. Surreal scenes, like a demon absorbing souls through intimate acts, juxtapose with more serious moments, such as a speech urging the working class to resist exploitation by the wealthy.
Visually, “I Love Boosters” captivates with brilliant set designs and costumes, continually displaying a rich palette of colors. The film’s musical score, composed by Tune-Yards, adds to its charm, featuring a memorable “Hi-Yo” leitmotif that lingers in the mind.
Despite its strengths, the film isn’t without flaws. While Moore’s performance as Christie Smith is adequate, the character might have benefitted from an actor with a more exaggerated approach to match the story’s whimsicality. Additionally, some comedic moments seem to miss their intended impact, possibly due to the film’s rapid pace and abundance of content.
“I Love Boosters” concludes with an upbeat, affirmative message, avoiding the often bleak endings associated with social satire. This fresh perspective on tough topics without resorting to a negative tone adds to its appeal.
In terms of creativity, few films this year match “I Love Boosters.” Riley’s unique vision, although occasionally uneven, delivers one of the most dynamic and fast-paced movies of the year.
