Allison Tilly transformed a challenging situation into a memorable championship week for Lemont. When Lemont faced a goalkeeper shortage before the sectional, Tilly, a sophomore normally playing as a defender, stepped up. She had no prior experience in goalkeeping but was ready to take on the challenge.

“I have a background in basketball, volleyball, and softball, so I knew I could handle it,” Tilly said. “I was confident and figured I’d give it a try since no one else was stepping up.” Her initial practice was on Monday, and after navigating Tuesday’s game, she dedicated herself to learning throughout the week.

Tilly’s performance on Friday night was exceptional. She made eight critical saves, including several in the last moments, leading Lemont to a 2-1 victory over the Celtics in the Class 2A Providence Sectional championship game in New Lenox.

Illinois-Chicago recruit Gabriela Kuruc was instrumental in the game, scoring both goals for Lemont, while Madison Weil provided an assist. This win marked Lemont’s first sectional title since 2018. Their upcoming match is against Geneva in the Kankakee Supersectional, as they aim to honor the retiring coach, Rick Prangen.

“Reaching this point is a major achievement since we haven’t been in this position since 2018,” Tilly said. “We want to make it a memorable last season for Coach Prangen.”

Aubrey Curry scored for Providence, equalizing the game at 1-1. However, Kuruc quickly responded with a decisive goal, shooting from 30 yards to retake the lead.

“We expected a fast-paced game,” Kuruc noted. “Our recent training sessions were all about speed and precision, and we showcased that, especially during the crucial moments.”

Tilly took charge in the final minutes, blocking several danger attempts from the Celtics and securing Lemont’s victory. “It was intense,” Tilly admitted. “I was incredibly nervous, hoping to prevent as many shots as possible. Thankfully, I managed to stop them.”

Coach Prangen praised Tilly’s effort, remarking, “She was outstanding in the game’s closing moments.” Despite concerns about overthinking during practice sessions, Tilly found clarity in the heat of competition.

“During the match, everything became natural,” she explained. “I relied on instinct and focused on the task.” Kuruc was impressed by Tilly’s quick adaptation, acknowledging her remarkable contribution in the semifinal win over Mother McAuley.

After the victory, assistant coach Mark Tomczak rushed onto the field to celebrate Tilly’s achievement. “I felt like I was on cloud nine,” Tilly shared. “Seeing everyone’s smiles and feeling so much pride was surreal.”
