The trailer for Focus Features’ film “Pressure” showcases an intense narrative centered around the D-Day invasion. Directed by Anthony Maras, this movie features a remarkable cast including Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, Kerry Condon, Chris Messina, and Damien Lewis.
World War II has inspired countless films, yet “Pressure” delivers a fresh perspective by focusing on the critical weather planning behind the Normandy invasion. The plot revolves around British meteorologist Captain James Stagg, played by Andrew Scott. He advises General Dwight D. Eisenhower, portrayed by Brendan Fraser, after receiving a recommendation from Winston Churchill. In the movie, Eisenhower tells Stagg, “I need a forecast.”
Stagg, known for his rigid demeanor, must work alongside Eisenhower’s preferred meteorologist from the U.S., Irving Krick, played by Chris Messina. The two face the daunting task of agreeing on a forecast within 72 hours. Stagg predicts severe storms while Krick envisions clear skies. Stagg warns, “The storms that I am talking about are real, and the wrath of nature is real.” Eisenhower demands a consensus, which proves challenging.
The cast also includes Kerry Condon as Captain Kay Summersby, Eisenhower’s Irish secretary and confidant, and Damian Lewis as Bernard ‘Monty’ Montgomery, a British Army officer eager to move forward with the invasion.
Andrew Scott shines as Stagg, balancing strictness and charm. Brendan Fraser commands attention as Eisenhower, alternating between humor and the weight of past tragedies, notably the catastrophic Exercise Tiger, which resulted in over 700 American servicemen’s deaths. Eisenhower feels immense pressure as he contemplates risking another disaster.
“Pressure,” adapted from David Haig’s 2014 play, marks Anthony Maras’ second feature film and follows his debut, “Hotel Mumbai,” a tense thriller about the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Maras’ direction ensures that the film’s complex narrative remains accessible. This accessibility is a testament to the screenplay crafted by Maras and Haig.
The movie provides a compelling look at a crucial moment in history, highlighted by the strong performances of its cast, bringing depth to the story. You don’t need to be a history enthusiast to appreciate the gripping tale, which coincides with the 82nd anniversary of D-Day.
“Pressure” holds a PG-13 rating for war violence, bloody depictions, strong language, and smoking, with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It’s currently available in theaters.
