In Westfield, New Jersey, voters recently gathered to discuss affordable housing and data centers. However, a pressing question emerged: What is happening with their congressman, Republican Tom Kean Jr.? Steve McCabe, an 80-year-old retired lawyer, directed this question to Jon Bramnick, a GOP state senator. Bramnick had no details to offer about Kean’s ongoing medical absence, now approaching three months. He did mention Kean’s past dedication to attending legislative votes, even during snowstorms. Now, Kean has missed over 100 votes in Congress, absent from both Washington and his district.
This situation is politically significant. Kean’s district is a Democrat target in the effort to regain congressional control. Despite Kean’s office confirming his re-election campaign, he faces no opposition in the upcoming primary. Conversely, several Democrats vie for their party’s nomination. Harrison Neely, Kean’s campaign consultant, explained the congressman is addressing a medical emergency. Neely assured transparency and a full return to duties “very soon.” according to Bramnick, this indicates a serious condition.
Kean’s district, the 7th Congressional District, includes various suburbs and small towns. Notably, it encompasses former President Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course. Redistricting in 2021 made it more Republican-friendly. However, the district shifted between parties in recent midterms, with seats changing from Republican Leonard Lance to Democrat Tom Malinowski in 2018 and from Malinowski to Kean in 2022.
Kean last voted on March 5. His continued absence has attracted growing attention. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., stated, “We’re expecting him back here soon,” emphasizing full transparency. Kean’s family has deep political roots, with his father serving as governor. A New Jersey Globe report mentioned Kean’s call about his health, noting his confidence in recovery prospects.
Residents like McCabe seek updates, expressing concern for Kean’s health. Bruce Paterson, a 75-year-old Democrat, supports Kean for the general election, citing a need for party balance in the state. Speculation arises about Bramnick potentially replacing Kean if he steps aside. Bramnick emphasized Kean’s re-election campaign and expressed doubts about fitting within the modern Republican Party. Bramnick’s recent criticism of Trump contrasts with Kean’s endorsement of the former president.
Democrats running for the primary have critiqued Kean’s silence on his situation. Michael Roth, a former Small Business Administration official, accused Kean of abandoning his responsibilities. Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy pilot, echoed concerns, highlighting Kean’s absence during important infrastructure funding decisions for a railway tunnel. Additional candidates Tina Shah and Brian Varela joined the criticism.
Despite these challenges, Kean enjoys a financial lead over potential Democratic opponents. Political analyst Benjamin Dworkin from Rowan Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship suggests Kean’s effectiveness post-return will define the upcoming election, rather than his absences during the spring.
