Victor Wembanyama Reflects on Spurs’ Victory and Gregg Popovich’s Impact

5 days ago 0

In San Antonio, emotions ran high for Victor Wembanyama following the Spurs’ victory in the Western Conference finals. The win secured the Spurs a spot in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. When asked about his relationship with former coach Gregg Popovich, Wembanyama struggled to articulate his feelings. He acknowledged Popovich’s immense experience, stating, “I need to call him. I need to see him. I need to talk to him because there’s no way I can understand right now how he feels.”

Popovich holds the title of President of Spurs Basketball and is regarded informally as coach emeritus, often seen at practices and games. Despite retiring last year after a stroke ended his active coaching career, his influence remains strong. He visited the team’s locker room after their Game 3 loss in the West finals against Oklahoma City, offering both advice and criticism.

Mitch Johnson, now coaching the Spurs, stepped in when Popovich retired unexpectedly. Devin Vassell, Spurs guard, praised Popovich’s unparalleled wisdom and contributions, which continue to be invaluable to the team.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set in San Antonio against a Knicks team coached by Mike Brown, a former assistant under Popovich. Brown highlighted Popovich’s lasting impact both on and off the court, stating, “His presence is very, very much felt all the time and I’ve got a lot of respect for the organization for a lot of different reasons.”

Popovich still carries substantial respect within the Spurs organization. Following recent travels and games, he was there to meet the team at the airport. He engaged with Wembanyama after an ejection from Game 4 against Minnesota, emphasizing his role in guiding the team even in retirement.

Popovich’s coaching legacy includes five NBA championships, the first of which was against the Knicks. Johnson, benefiting from Popovich’s insight, regards him as a continually available resource.

“I’m fortunate my old boss is still around, and has been through this a few times,” Johnson said.

In anticipation of the finals, Wembanyama feels an urgency to connect with Popovich, who has been instrumental in shaping the player and the team. Wembanyama knows there are still crucial lessons and victories ahead, with Popovich serving as the guide.
