Controversial officiating extends beyond the NFL and NBA. A recent incident at the WWE Clash in Italy showcased this issue during the Undisputed WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther.
On Sunday, referee Dan Engler made a questionable decision that impacted the match outcome. Rhodes delivered a second Cross Rhodes to Gunther, landing him near the ropes. When Rhodes pinned Gunther, the referee started counting, overlooking Gunther’s foot under the ropes. According to rules, this positioning should have interrupted the count.
Engler focused only on counting the pin for Rhodes. Consequently, Rhodes retained the championship by pinning Gunther for the three count. Gunther, visibly upset, repeatedly pointed out to Engler that his foot placement was missed.
Rhodes celebrated his victory with fans at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, while Gunther left the ring in frustration. This match marked Rhodes’ second title defense since prevailing over Drew McIntyre earlier this month.
Gunther had earned his title shot after defeating Royce Keys only two weeks prior. Initially, he hesitated to sign the contract for the match, with Keys threatening to claim the opportunity.
Gunther reminded Rhodes about his tendency to dominate the spotlight on ‘Friday Night SmackDown.’ Now, he has a real grievance following the questionable officiating. The timeline for Gunther’s next title opportunity remains uncertain.
