Thousands of tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been unexpectedly withdrawn just days before the tournament begins. This event, set against the backdrop of already waning interest among soccer fans, is raising questions.
Ticketdata.com, a prominent source for ticket tracking, estimated that around 74,000 tickets were available directly from the organizers until last Saturday. However, this number suddenly dropped to 44,000 and has now reduced to under 30,000. So far, FIFA has not provided any explanation for this sudden decrease. Ticketdata.com has referred to the situation as a “sudden inventory removal.”
Online speculation among fans suggests a few possibilities. Some believe tickets may have been allocated to sponsors or other parties. Others think it might be an effort to create artificial scarcity to stimulate demand.
Newsweek has reached out to FIFA through its official Switzerland-based portal for a statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, resale prices for tickets are beginning to recover after weeks of decline. This recovery comes amidst concerns from businesses in host cities, who have noticed lower-than-expected interest in this year’s competition.
Much of the subdued interest has been attributed to FIFA’s pricing strategy for the 2026 tournament. Ticket prices have surged when compared to previous World Cups, drawing criticism from fans and some state politicians in hosting areas.
This story is still unfolding, and further updates are anticipated.
