Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is moving into a November runoff election after a challenging first term marked by significant events. The city dealt with its most destructive wildfire in history and ongoing homelessness issues. In a recent statement, Bass expressed gratitude to her supporters. I appreciate you for standing with me when others doubted me, because you know who I am,
she said. Bass is determined to continue serving and achieve victory in the upcoming contest.
The Associated Press has not named the second candidate to enter the runoff. Historically, California’s vote tallies can change as mail and drop-off ballots are counted post-election. Republican Spencer Pratt, known from reality TV’s “The Hills,” is currently in second place. He criticizes Bass’s handling of fires and homelessness. Pratt suggested hosting debates every Friday, challenging Bass to improve the city infrastructure. Enough is enough,
stated Pratt, addressing issues from potholes to streetlights.
Aside from Bass and Pratt, Nithya Raman, a city council member and a former ally of Bass, is trailing. Raman, a Democrat with backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, focuses on reducing inequality, revitalizing the entertainment sector, and increasing housing.
With 14 candidates on the ballot, a November runoff is anticipated. Other notable candidates include tech entrepreneur Adam Miller and community activist Rae Huang. Pratt’s campaign drew national interest due to dissatisfaction with liberal city governance and viral AI-generated videos.
Bass has secured endorsements from prominent Democrats like Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and Nancy Pelosi. Candidates made urgent appeals to voters as turnout was expected to be low. Bass campaigned in the Hispanic community, recalling past federal immigration raids. Pratt claimed the race was primarily between him and Bass.
Residents showed mixed support. Voter Jose Rivera said Bass deserves a second term for her achievements. Meanwhile, Leo Blain supports Raman for her understanding of the city’s dynamics and coalition-building potential.
Los Angeles faces significant challenges, including recovering from Bass’s absence during the Palisades Fire in a wealthy neighborhood in 2025, where 12 lives were lost. Pratt, who lost his home, criticized the slow recovery. Despite a reduction in homelessness, the city still struggles with visible encampments and other social issues. Los Angeles also experiences rising living costs and a population decline. Public safety concerns grow as the city prepares for the World Cup and 2028 Olympics amid LAPD’s budget and personnel worries.
Mayor Bass acknowledges her past missteps but highlights the decreased homelessness and historically low homicide rates. Pratt aims to reduce homelessness and increase police numbers, seeking to challenge the status quo. His ties to Donald Trump might impact his appeal in a largely Democratic city.
