The Cleveland Browns shocked the National Football League recently by trading Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams. Garrett, who broke the league’s single-season sack record, will bolster an already formidable Rams team. This move marks a significant shift for the Browns, who will now navigate a future without their star player for the first time since 2016.
Garrett initially requested a trade last year, but the Browns signed him to a four-year, $160 million extension. This seemed to secure his place in Cleveland until 2030. The Browns faced a difficult decision when the Rams offered a package that included 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, along with first-round, second-round, and third-round picks spanning 2027 to 2029. Browns General Manager Andrew Berry described the offer as ‘too great’ to refuse.
Berry noted Garrett as a cornerstone player, emphasizing his homegrown status and Hall of Fame potential. Garrett has consistently excelled, notching double-digit sack seasons for eight straight years and achieving a minimum of 14 sacks in five of those. Despite the intention for Garrett to remain a ‘one-helmet’ player, the trade proposal warranted reevaluation in favor of the team’s broader benefits.
As Garrett joins the Rams, their ambitions are clear. They recently extended quarterback Matthew Stafford’s contract and selected Alabama’s Ty Simpson as their 13th overall pick in the draft. The Browns, meanwhile, have benefited from their recent draft picks, securing tackle Spencer Fano and wide receiver K.C. Concepcion. With additional first-round picks for the future, Cleveland aims to build on its strategy.
Jared Verse, another impressive player included in the trade, has made two Pro Bowl appearances and recorded 12 sacks and 22 tackles for loss. This adds a dynamic edge to Cleveland’s roster changes.
The Browns and Rams are in different phases. Cleveland is reconstructing its roster with young talent, while the Rams are pushing for immediate playoff contention. Sports coverage continues at Fox News Digital.
