In Bar Harbor, Maine, Rep. Ro Khanna from California addressed the recent allegations against Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Khanna suggested Platner should apologize to the women who reported unsettling behavior experienced in their past relationships with him. These remarks followed accusations from three women, as reported by The New York Times.
Khanna was in Maine to support Platner and other Democratic candidates ahead of the upcoming primary. During a brief exchange with NBC News, Khanna expressed his disapproval of the alleged conduct. He stated, “I think he should apologize. I believe what he did was wrong, was misogynistic, was toxic or volatile.” Khanna emphasized the importance of acknowledging and confronting a misogynistic culture.
One of the women, Lyndsey Fifield, described a particularly alarming incident. She recounted that Platner allegedly twisted her arm, forced her into a room, and blocked her exit, instructing her to stay until she calmed down. Platner has contested these allegations and claims of physical abuse. In a discussion with MS NOW, he attributed the claims to political motivations, noting the involvement of Fifield in conservative circles.
Despite the controversy, Khanna remains a prominent supporter of Platner. Speaking at an event with Platner and other political figures, Khanna highlighted Platner’s accountability and efforts to improve. “He understood that those years were not his best,” Khanna told the audience. “He took responsibility and has worked to become a better man.”
