James Dolan’s Potential Redemption with New York Knicks

2 days ago 0

James L. Dolan has led the New York Knicks as owner for nearly 30 years. Much of this tenure saw the team struggling in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Knicks made it to the NBA playoffs’ championship round in 1999, the same year Dolan took charge. However, they only reached the playoffs seven more times in the following 23 years. In 2019, the team had the NBA’s worst record, prompting Bloomberg to question if Dolan was the worst owner in professional sports.

Dolan’s reputation in New York City has similarly suffered. He has publicly clashed with fans, employees, city politicians, and even his players. Yet, recent seasons have seen a remarkable turnaround for the Knicks. They are now contenders for the championship, facing the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA finals starting Wednesday. If victorious, Dolan, now 71, would see the Knicks win their first championship since 1973. This would have happened nearly 19 years before Zohran Mamdani, the current mayor of New York, was born.

The big question remains: can success on the court mend old wounds? Kathryn Wylde, a seasoned New York power broker, believes the city might be ready to forgive. She stated, “Everyone loves a winner, and Jim Dolan sure looks like a winner right now.” But not everyone shares this sentiment. Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Manhattan borough president and a vocal critic of Dolan, remarked on Dolan’s challenging position. “He’s the owner representing icons of Manhattan and the city at large, and to be so unloved — people love to hate him,” Hoylman-Sigal said.
