Trump Criticizes Senator Tillis Amid Nomination Discussions

2 hours ago 0

Trump’s Remarks on Thom Tillis

President Donald Trump criticized Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina during a discussion on Air Force One. Trump remarked:

Senator Tillis is a loser. That’s why he didn’t run. He didn’t run because I wouldn’t support him. And he’s just an angry man because he’s not going to be a senator any longer. He wasn’t respected in the Senate.

Tillis holds a significant position on the Senate Judiciary Committee. His vote is pivotal for the confirmation of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Tillis has firmly stated he would oppose any nominee who minimizes the January 6 Capitol attack.

Tillis’ Stance on Attorney General Nominee

Senator Tillis emphasized his position to reporters:

The key for Todd, or anybody going through judiciary committee, is being pretty tight on January the 6. They better not have said for one minute that the people that beat up police officers, like these right down here, were righteous people. You come even close to saying that, you don’t have a chance of getting my vote in judiciary.

He added that addressing the issue of the anti-weaponization fund could help Blanche navigate the Senate confirmation hurdles. Newsweek reached out to Tillis’ office for further comments.

Concerns Over Blanche’s Nomination

The nomination of Todd Blanche sparked concerns due to his previous representation of Trump in high-profile cases. The White House praised Blanche’s leadership, highlighting his performance and alignment with the president’s objectives.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson addressed these concerns:

Todd Blanche has done an excellent job as acting Attorney General and will continue doing so as Attorney General. President Trump has a great relationship with Todd and is very pleased with the job he’s done so far. Todd Blanche is an American patriot who fearlessly fought on behalf of President Trump against the Democrats’ illegal and unprecedented lawfare campaign. The President’s entire team at the Department of Justice is doing a great job advocating for sanity, law and order, and policies that keep Americans safe.

Blanche has served as acting attorney general since April, following Pam Bondi’s dismissal. Trump commended Blanche’s capabilities and criticized Tillis further, adding:

Todd Blanche is a brilliant guy who everybody likes, and everybody respects.

Challenges in Blanche’s Confirmation

Blanche’s confirmation process highlights Trump’s sway over Senate Republicans. With a narrow Republican majority, any dissent could challenge the nomination process. Discussions will likely cover Blanche’s qualifications and the Justice Department’s ties with the White House.

The anti-weaponization fund, intended to compensate those unfairly targeted by the government, has faced legal hurdles and bipartisan opposition. Consequently, the administration obeyed a federal court order halting the fund temporarily.

Senate Leaders Weigh In

Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted the uncertainty surrounding Blanche’s confirmation:

Most of our members are pretty deferential to who the president wants in some of those key positions. And he’s obviously serving in the role already and clearly has experience in it. So, that’ll serve him well. But this is an environment where nothing’s a safe or sure bet.

Texas Senator John Cornyn expressed a cautious stance regarding his support for Blanche, emphasizing the dual role of the Attorney General as both a member of the president’s cabinet and the nation’s chief law enforcement officer.

Cornyn remarked:

The problem with the office of Attorney General is that there’s basically, well, you are a member of the president’s cabinet. But you’re also the chief law enforcement officer for the country. And you’re not the president’s lawyer. So I’ll be asking some questions about getting commitments on that.
