Cleveland Browns Trade Shakes NFL: Myles Garrett for Jared Verse

2 days ago 0

On Monday, June 1, the Cleveland Browns made headlines by executing a trade with the Los Angeles Rams. They sent Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year known for his impressive 23-sack season, to the Rams. In exchange, the Browns received Jared Verse, an edge rusher, alongside a first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2028, and a third-round pick in 2029.

The trade’s unexpectedness was evident when Verse spoke to reporters on his first day with the Browns. He expressed his surprise and initial disappointment about leaving Los Angeles. Verse shared, “It caught me by surprise. I loved L.A. I loved the coaches, the organization, my teammates, everybody who was a part of it… It was upsetting. I was upset for a good little bit of time. But you’re an athlete, you understand the nature of the business.” He added, “I’m happy to be a part of the Browns. I’m happy that they believed in me and that they were able to make that trade and bring me here. I truly do believe in everybody in the locker room, but it was upsetting at first.”

Jared Verse joins the Browns as an electrifying young player. Drafted 19th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Florida State, Verse had an impressive rookie season with 66 tackles, 18 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. His performance earned him the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Verse’s second year showed more growth. Leading all edge rushers in quarterback hits with 27 and ranking third in hurries with 64, he totalled 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, 11 tackles for loss, and 36 pressures, placing him among the top players in the league.

The Pro Bowl player has 12.0 career sacks at just 25 years old and continues to develop. Verse’s potential aligns well with the Browns’ rebuilding ambitions. If successful, he could become the leading defender in the NFL.

The trade is beneficial for both teams. The Rams receive a top-tier player in Garrett as they pursue a Super Bowl win with a veteran team led by Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams, and Puka Nacua. Meanwhile, the Browns focus on future prospects with Verse and supplementary draft picks.

Additionally, Verse’s connection to Ohio adds a personal touch, as he returns to his home state to become the face of the Browns’ rebuild.
