On the night of the crucial sectional semifinal game, Treylan Webster delivered an inspiring speech that rallied the Brother Rice High School baseball team when it seemed their season was slipping away. Webster reminded his teammates of their hard work and urged them to remain calm and united.
His encouragement didn’t end with words. Webster’s actions on the field spoke volumes. In a tense moment, he hit a game-tying RBI infield single, leading the Crusaders to a remarkable 7-6 comeback victory over Reavis in eight innings to advance in the Class 4A Brother Rice Sectional semifinal in Chicago.
The game saw significant contributions from various players. Brady Cunningham, a Texas A&M recruit, had ignited the rally with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. Colin Campbell, heading to Louisville, walked and scored the decisive run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.
“Everyone was staying together, rooting for each other,” Cunningham said, reflecting the team’s unity.
Aidan Dillon was stellar on the mound, pitching the final three innings without surrendering a hit to clinch the victory. Meanwhile, Jonathan Liesen homered and scored three times for Reavis, showcasing his talent.
Webster stepped up when the Crusaders were trailing by one run with bases loaded in the seventh. He hit a chopper that proved challenging for Reavis, resulting in the game-tying run. Webster acknowledged the nerves but credited his success to his teammates.
“I couldn’t have done it without all these guys. I’m just really blessed to have another day with them,” Webster said.
His role as a leader hasn’t gone unnoticed. Cunningham praised Webster for being a constant source of support and inspiration, not only on the field but also off it.
Brother Rice coach Sean McBride expressed admiration for Webster’s transformation from a quiet seventh grader to a vocal leader, emphasizing the growth that the school encourages.
Webster’s journey in sports extends beyond baseball, as his experience in wrestling taught him resilience and toughness.
“You’re going to get punched in the mouth. That’s what happened in this game. They beat us the first half of the game but you never quit,” Webster said.
His perseverance led the Crusaders to an unforgettable victory.
Brother Rice is now set to face Mount Carmel in the sectional championship game, carrying the momentum from their thrilling comeback.
