The Mount Sinai Health System has confirmed receiving a grand jury subpoena requesting information about adolescent patients who have received gender-related treatment. A spokesperson for the hospital revealed this development on Friday, making Mount Sinai the second hospital system in Manhattan publicly known to be under federal investigation for gender-transition care provided to minors.
This investigation aligns with efforts by the Trump administration to end gender-transition treatments for adolescents, citing potential harm to vulnerable youth. The first hospital to disclose a similar subpoena was NYU Langone, which admitted receiving demands for details sufficient to identify patients under 18 who had undergone gender-related treatments since 2020. Both subpoenas have been issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas based on hospital information.
Lucia Lee, a spokesperson for Mount Sinai, stated the hospital is dedicated to safeguarding patient privacy. If compelled to produce records, they plan to provide only de-identified information, ensuring all patient-identifying details are removed. Lee’s statement did not clarify whether Mount Sinai intends to challenge the subpoena.
The hospital is mandated by New York law to inform affected patients if their records are ultimately produced. This protective measure ensures that patient privacy remains a priority, even during legal proceedings.
