The NBA has issued lifetime bans to two individuals following an incident during Game 1 of the NBA Finals where one individual entered the court and attempted a selfie near San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama. The event unfolded during the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s matchup against the New York Knicks.
An NBA spokesman stated, “The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas.” The person’s arrest, according to sources, involved a juvenile, pulled from the court by security guards without making physical contact with players.
“I hesitate to describe that person as a fan,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed, adding that ulterior motives might have been involved.
Wembanyama seemed unfazed by the situation, recalling a previous disruption in January 2024 caused by a bat in the Spurs’ arena. On Wednesday, the game halted for a brief 1 minute and 29 seconds, followed by a jump ball restart.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson dismissed the incident’s significance, praising security for swift removal, stating, “I thought security got him out of there. I think everybody moved on to the next play.” Crew chief Scott Foster and his team were commended by Silver for minimizing game disruption.
Silver remarked on the nature of modern sports security, emphasizing the global stage’s potential for foolish acts. The incident triggers learning for future handles.
Another situation needing attention involved Knicks guard Jalen Brunson and remarks made by a courtside fan during the final minute of play. While Brunson didn’t comment, Knicks forward Josh Hart noted Brunson’s general composure despite apparent provocations.
Fan behavior remains a focus for the NBA, maintaining consistent enforcement of the NBA Fan Code of Conduct to curtail misconduct. A memo was issued emphasizing proactive identification and response to inappropriate behavior.
