Jurors Hear Emotional Testimonies in Karmelo Anthony Murder Trial

23 hours ago 0

Jurors in Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial experienced an emotionally charged day as they listened to a frantic 911 call, observed surveillance footage, and heard testimonies from coaches and trainers on Thursday. These individuals had attempted to save Austin Metcalf after the Texas teenager was stabbed at a high school track meet.

Anthony, who is 19, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder stemming from the April 2025 incident involving Metcalf. He claims he acted in self-defense. The case has drawn national attention and scrutiny.

“The defense is accepting part of the burden here because if they want the jury instructed on self-defense, they have to prove up that split-second statement,” Texas defense attorney Jeremy Rosenthal stated.

Opening statements played a critical role according to Rosenthal, who cited studies indicating that many jurors form their initial opinions early and maintain them throughout the trial.

The case has sparked controversy, particularly after a jury was selected without Black jurors. Protests unfolded outside the courthouse, with demonstrators rallying support for both Anthony and Metcalf, leading to heated exchanges between the groups.

Competing Stories from Prosecution and Defense

Collin County prosecutor Bill Wirskyke labeled the stabbing as a “provoked unjustified murder.” He insisted that the case is not about race or self-defense. Defense attorney Mike Howard countered, portraying Anthony’s actions as a “split second of fear and chaos.” Howard urged jurors to concentrate on the evidence rather than the public narratives surrounding the case.

911 Call and Surveillance Footage

The jury viewed footage from cameras around Kuykendall Stadium and heard a distressing 911 call. During the call, CPR was reported as being administered as an attempt to save Metcalf, who was losing consciousness.

Reporters noted that the background voices encouraged Metcalf amid dire circumstances. Metcalf’s family displayed visible grief as they listened to the call, while Anthony kept his eyes closed during most of it.

Efforts to Save Metcalf

Tiffany Whiteaker, an athletic trainer, testified about rushing to Metcalf’s aid, performing CPR, and using an AED until paramedics arrived. She recounted the scene, with a commotion in the stands and a student pointing out Anthony as the assailant.

Another witness, Joshua Rebmann, an Army veteran and football coach, testified about using his military training in an effort to save Metcalf.

Coaches’ Testimonies

Vincent Hooper, a coach, shared that Anthony admitted to the stabbing, claiming it was in response to Metcalf putting his hands on him. Hooper also recalled a conversation in which he warned Anthony about the gravity of the situation if Metcalf died, to which Anthony responded optimistically.

Robert Starr, another coach, described finding Metcalf wounded. He testified about the significance of entering a team’s tent uninvited, connecting it to the encounter between the students.

Looking Ahead

Testimony will continue as witnesses provide accounts of the confrontation. Legal analysts are keenly watching for any testimony that may diverge from the established narratives presented by both the prosecution and defense.
