Embrace Nature: The Touch Grass Challenge

Rediscover the Outdoors

Welcome to the summer challenge aimed at reconnecting you with the real world. This week, we’re urging you to step away from screens and into nature. Over the next month, we’ll share exercises encouraging you to spend time outdoors.

The Importance of Green Time

Many U.S. adults spend excessive hours on devices, with most of their time indoors. Dr. John La Puma, an internist, compares this to ‘ultraprocessed time’ akin to ultraprocessed food, lacking nourishment. Instead of cutting device time completely, introduce ‘greens’ by enjoying green spaces.

Research reveals that outdoor time reduces stress, elevates mood, and enhances focus and memory. Commit to spending 20 minutes daily in nature this June for improved health.

Implementing Green Time

A study with nearly 20,000 subjects showed that 120 minutes in nature weekly significantly boosts health and well-being. You can visit a park or enjoy street trees. A forest isn’t necessary.

Plan your day wisely. Identify two 10-minute slots for outdoor time. Megan Delaney from Monmouth University suggests early morning strolls. Even in urban areas, nature exists on the walls or sidewalks.

If 20 minutes seem unreachable, assess your phone usage — it often surprises users. You’ll likely be able to find time for nature.

Disconnect to Reconnect

Experts recommend leaving your phone behind in green spaces for greater benefits. If unavoidable, keep it switched off. Front steps or a backyard also suffice.

Heading outdoors sans phone can reset your mind. Marc Berman from the University of Chicago speaks of nature’s ‘soft fascination’ which captivates without exhaustion, encouraging reflection.

Try it despite initial anxiety. People generally enjoy nature walks more than anticipated.

Engage Senses and Reflect

Notice surroundings — wind gusts or oddly shaped clouds. If you maintain this habit, we’ll continue motivating you with additional exercises.

Reflect nightly after reducing ‘ultraprocessed time’ and adding greens: Are you stressed less? Feel better physically or mentally? Share in comments.

Summer approaches. Put down the phone. Go outside. Join us in Well’s summer challenge by devoting 20 minutes daily outdoors, contributing to screen-free time.
