The NASCAR community is currently mourning the loss of a significant figure, Ned Jarrett. Known as both a legendary driver and broadcaster, Jarrett passed away at 93 years old in his home located in Newton, North Carolina. His death was due to natural causes.

Jarrett stands out as a NASCAR Hall of Famer. In 1998, he was recognized among NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers, a testament to his impact on the sport. His career in the Cup Series spanned from 1953 to 1966. Growing up working on his family’s farm and sawmill, he discovered racing when Hickory Speedway opened near his home.

“I played a little basketball and baseball in high school and thought I had some athletic ability,” Jarrett once commented, as reported by NASCAR. “When they opened the speedway, I ran the first race they ever held there. I was hooked.”

Jarrett holds a lasting record for Ford drivers, securing 43 wins in vehicles bearing the Blue Oval. This record remains unchallenged, with Team Penske’s Joey Logano being the closest among active drivers, boasting 35 wins with Ford out of his 37 career victories.

After retiring from racing, Jarrett transitioned into a successful broadcasting career. He began as a pit reporter for Motor Racing Network (MRN) radio. From there, he moved to television, working with both CBS and ESPN. His broadcasting career saw a highlight during the 1993 Daytona 500, where he narrated the fierce competition between his son, Dale Jarrett, and Dale Earnhardt Sr. The event concluded with Dale Jarrett’s victory.

“You know who I’m pulling for, it’s Dale Jarrett. Bring her to the inside, Dale, don’t let him get down there,” Jarrett exclaimed during the broadcast. “He’s gonna make it! Dale Jarrett’s gonna win the Daytona 500! Alright!”

Ned Jarrett’s legacy continued through his sons, Dale and Glenn, who followed his path into broadcasting after their respective racing careers concluded.

Martha, Ned Jarrett’s wife, passed away in 2023 after a 67-year marriage. The Jarrett family’s presence in racing and broadcasting has left a significant mark on NASCAR history.
