Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is currently under scrutiny as he campaigns for Maine’s Senate seat. This follows recent allegations concerning his past behavior, which have raised questions about his viability as a candidate. Platner will contest against incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the upcoming election.
Reports, including a story from The New York Times, cite accusations from previous romantic partners who labeled Platner’s behavior as “toxic” and claimed he lacks respect for women. These revelations have led some to wonder about the future of his campaign. Despite this, Platner remains undeterred. In an interview with Maine Public, he stated that such stories aim to distract from important issues like healthcare and economic inequality.
Platner’s campaign has faced several challenges. Among them is a former tattoo, which resembled a Nazi SS symbol; he claims unawareness of its implications. The tattoo was obtained while intoxicated with fellow Marines in 2007. Moreover, past Reddit comments and revelations of inappropriate communications with women have surfaced. His wife, Amy Gertner, has publicly supported him despite these controversies.
One of the more damning accounts came from Lyndsey Fifield, a former partner who accused Platner of abusive behavior. Platner has denied these claims, describing their relationship as casual. He also viewed the heightened scrutiny as a sign that his campaign poses a threat, suggesting resources spent to undermine him indicate fear from opponents.
Fifield has emphasized the need for cultural change in Washington regarding abuse victims. In a social media post, she expressed her desire for a better environment for her daughters and stressed the importance of speaking out against abuse.
Platner attributes past behavior to untreated PTSD and depression experienced after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. He began addressing his mental health issues with therapy in 2017, which he claims improved his well-being. Platner expected scrutiny but is surprised by its intensity. He remains set on engaging with Maine voters directly, believing his grassroots efforts will outweigh the controversy.
He stated, “I believe if I continue to engage with people and discuss the realities Mainers face, the challenges of everyday life, we will achieve victory.” Platner remains focused on meeting constituents and addressing their needs, despite the controversies surrounding his campaign.
