Mass Protests Against Albania’s Luxury Resort Plan
This week, thousands of Albanians took to the streets to oppose a proposed luxury resort supported by Jared Kushner’s investment firm. Concerns center on the resort’s threat to a protected coastal region inhabited by flamingos, seals, and sea turtles. Protesters expressed their outrage with banners stating “Albania is not for sale” and “Ivanka! Ivanka! Keep your hands away from Narta,” referencing the Vjosa-Narta wetland where the resort is planned. Demonstrators also used flamingo cutouts to emphasize the risk to local wildlife.
Tirana Protests and Environmental Concerns
In Albania’s capital, Tirana, protestors gathered throughout the week, culminating in a large demonstration on Thursday. Construction equipment has been present at the site for the last month. Protestor Lindita Komani told Reuters, “Albania belongs to the Albanian people. We decide what we want here, not corrupt politicians.” Concerned environmentalists stress the area’s importance for species like flamingos, seals, and sea turtles. Some protestors demand Prime Minister Edi Rama resign.
“More than 1 percent of the global flamingo population lives in Albania,” said ornithologist Ledi Selgjekaj.
Selgjekaj emphasized the need for careful investment decisions, noting the significance of protected areas.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) condemned the development, highlighting the destruction of biodiversity hotspots. They stressed the importance of the Vjosa–Narta ecosystem, a vital habitat for migratory birds and endangered species. WWF expressed concerns over the lack of transparency and environmental compliance, potentially conflicting with EU laws.
Peaceful Protests and Occasional Clashes
Protests generally remained peaceful but occasionally turned violent. Demonstrators faced clashes with security forces, including police deploying water cannons on Wednesday. This unrest coincides with broader anti-government protests in Albania over corruption allegations, leading to further clashes and arrests.
Jared Kushner’s Resort Plans in Albania
The proposed project includes two parts: a coastal development in Narta Lagoon and a smaller resort on Sazan island. SPAK has initiated an investigation into 2024 decisions that changed land classifications, possibly easing the project’s approval. The development plans intend to convert the sensitive coastline into a high-end destination with 10,000 rooms and villas. Prime Minister Rama portrays this project as crucial for enhancing Albania’s tourism appeal.
Officials reported Kushner and Ivanka Trump visited Albania for ongoing discussions. Asher Abehsera, chairman of Sazan Real Estate Development, supports the project, citing goals of responsible stewardship and job creation.
“We respect ongoing public and institutional processes,” Abehsera previously stated.
Ivanka Trump explained they discovered the island serendipitously during a swim from a friend’s boat, leading them to a hike around the area.
A similar project in Serbia faced setbacks after local charges related to development improprieties.
