Family Seeks Justice for Emilio Valdez’s Tragic Death

2 hours ago 0

Tiffany Valdez vividly remembers the night guns fired and her brother, Emilio Valdez, was killed. On June 7, 2018, Emilio left his mother’s home in Pontiac, Michigan, entered a Pontiac Grand Prix, and was later shot inside. He suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the chest and head before being thrown into Osmun Lake.

Emilio’s family appeared in Investigation Discovery’s series, “Bodies in the Water,” which discusses homicide cases involving water. The series demonstrates how forensic evidence helps solve murders.

“I heard the gunshots,” Tiffany Valdez explained. “I ran outside and saw the car driving off with loud music. That was the last time I talked to him.” Tiffany learned through social media about a body discovered in Osmun Lake, leading to the heartbreaking task of identifying her brother.

Emilio grew up in a large, supportive family. Known for kindness and friendship, he was a star athlete. Tiffany recalled Emilio’s generosity, citing a time he gave his shoes to a classmate in need. “He was kind, giving, and loved meeting people,” she said.

Before his disappearance, Emilio was active on Snapchat. However, his social media updates ceased suddenly. He had been spending more time with a new group, unfamiliar to his family, unlike his previous friends and teammates.

After Emilio’s murder, investigations uncovered a blood-soaked trail and damaged benches near Osmun Lake. Police found a trail of blood, tire tracks, and drag marks, indicating Emilio’s body had been dragged. Retired Detective Dawn Mullins noted the challenges in solving the case.

It took years before an arrest was made. For four years, Emilio’s murder remained unsolved. In 2022, a new team of detectives reopened the investigation. They discovered a Snapchat message sent shortly before Emilio left home, connecting it to Angel Jose Alvarez, a main suspect.

Phone records showed Alvarez contacted family after the murder. His mother reported the vehicle Emilio was last seen in as stolen. The investigation led to arrests of Alvarez, his brother, and his mother.

Tiffany experienced relief knowing the family received some justice. The trial led to Alvarez’s conviction, giving him a sentence of 36½ to 80 years for second-degree murder. His family received lighter sentences after pleading no contest to related charges.

The motive for Emilio’s murder remains unclear, though jealousy is suspected. Angel Alvarez has yet to admit involvement, leaving the family with questions. “We hope Angel will admit what he did,” Tiffany stated. “The hardest part is living without closure.”

Tiffany Valdez and her family hope their justice pursuit inspires others. However, Emilio’s story serves as a cautionary tale. “Be careful who you call a friend,” Tiffany advised.
