Immigration judges are experiencing a significant increase in their workload as the administration intensifies efforts to expedite deportations. This change has raised concerns among attorneys representing immigrants, who fear that the rapid pace may lead to violations of due process rights.
On June 3, a family was seen leaving the San Antonio Immigration Court. These courts are now handling large numbers of cases, often exceeding 100 per day, during what are known as “mega immigration hearings.” These hearings are starting this week in several major U.S. cities.
In San Antonio, Immigration Judge Cynthia LaFuente-Gaona normally addresses a few dozen cases daily. Her courtroom is a scene where individuals and families present their cases, seeking permission to stay in the United States.
