Tsunami Alert Issued After Powerful Earthquake in Southern Philippines

An alert for a potential tsunami was issued after a significant earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani in southern Philippines early Monday morning. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.8, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS has indicated that tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. local time. In response, authorities have issued a tsunami warning for various coastal areas throughout southern Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.

Residents in these regions have received urgent advice from the U.S. embassy in the Philippines to evacuate immediately to higher ground or move further inland to ensure safety.

The earthquake has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, with 129 people reported injured, according to local authorities.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has assessed that there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following this event.
