A Houston lawyer who previously defended Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against criminal charges and during his 2023 impeachment trial now endorses Mr. Paxton’s Democratic opponent in the U.S. Senate race, James Talarico. Dan Cogdell, the lawyer in question, expressed concerns over Mr. Paxton losing focus on his main duty—to serve the interests of the people of Texas.
Mr. Cogdell praised Mr. Talarico for prioritizing unity over division. He emphasized Mr. Talarico’s potential to unify both Democrats and some Republicans, deeming such collaboration essential in the current political climate. The endorsement was made public during a podcast with Mr. Talarico, recorded shortly after Mr. Paxton’s primary win against Senator John Cornyn.
This backing from Mr. Cogdell supports Mr. Talarico’s ongoing effort to attract Republican voters, particularly those who supported Mr. Cornyn, into his campaign. During the podcast, Mr. Talarico stated, “I’m not interested in pitting people against each other.”
Interestingly, Mr. Cogdell had previously reached the maximum personal contribution limit allowed by law for Mr. Paxton’s Senate campaign, as indicated by campaign finance records. However, in a subsequent interview with The New York Times, he mentioned reconsidering his support due to Mr. Paxton’s strong alignment with President Trump.
