There is newfound optimism among immigrants hoping for progress on applications stalled by recent policies, following a federal judge’s decision. The impact of a six-month delay on applications remains unclear. More than a million applications, including those for citizenship, green cards, work permits, and asylum, are waiting to be processed.
Judge John J. McConnell Jr. criticized the Trump administration’s policies, which he said made it difficult for immigrants to secure their status in the U.S. These policies, implemented by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, halted asylum applications and paused decisions on applications from 39 countries, largely in Africa and the Middle East.
In his decision, Judge McConnell stated that these policies did not only delay application processing but also affected the lives of many individuals based solely on their country of birth. Many have been left without work or legal status, unable to plan for the future.
The ruling is a triumph for labor organizations, including American Gateways, which sued the federal government over these policies in March. The nonprofit provides legal support for immigrants and has been advocating for changes.
