On Friday, President Trump made an uncommon decision in the Republican runoff for South Carolina governor by endorsing both candidates. Initially, he supported Pamela Evette, the state’s lieutenant governor, but she did not secure enough votes to avoid a runoff.
President Trump’s endorsement is highly sought after in Republican contests. This year’s Senate and House primaries have shown the weight of his backing. Despite this, his influence in gubernatorial races has been mixed.
Trump’s first endorsement of Evette occurred in late May. Yet, with the runoff approaching, he extended his support to her rival, Alan Wilson. Wilson has been South Carolina’s attorney general for 15 years. Trump’s statement on Truth Social clarified his decision: “I can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to Endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!” He assured voters that choosing either candidate would be beneficial.
This announcement was soon followed by Senator Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, who endorsed Alan Wilson. Polls had already favored Wilson over Evette, and Trump’s endorsement may strengthen his position even further.
