At Queen’s Club in London, Serena Williams thrilled fans as she returned to tennis after a nearly four-year hiatus. One of her dedicated supporters, Sarah, traveled from Northern Ireland to witness this moment. She, along with countless others, watched Williams compete as a wild card in the women’s doubles during the prestigious warm-up for Wimbledon.
Williams, 44, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and a 14-time Grand Slam doubles champion, teamed up with Victoria Mboko for a notable 7-6(2), 6-2 victory against third seeds Erin Routliffe of New Zealand and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the U.S. This match marked Williams’ first in 1,375 days.
Sarah, a devoted fan who attended Williams’ final singles match at the US Open in 2022, has watched her play at Wimbledon for 14 consecutive years. She even owns a smashed Wilson racket from a memorable match against Laura Robson in 2016. On Tuesday, there were no smashed rackets, as Williams eased into the match, hitting backhand volleys and serving at speeds reaching 113 mph.
With her return, Williams showcased skills reminiscent of her championship days. A forehand error missed at 4-1 was quickly corrected with a precise drop shot. The crowd erupted when she secured a game at 5-4 with a spectacular backhand winner. After 54 minutes, Williams and Mboko claimed the first set in a tiebreak, much to the delight of the audience.
“I had so much fun playing with Vicky. She really was able to hold up the team and play big on the big points, and I could really rely on her,” Williams shared during her on-court interview. “It just felt so natural playing with her, so it was actually really fun.”
When news of Williams’ participation broke on June 1, fans rushed to London to witness her comeback. Sarah, who had to catch a flight later that evening, knew she had to witness Williams’ return. Many fans see this as an opportunity to relish moments with their legendary hero once more.
Williams’ supporters, dubbed “Rena’s Army,” gathered as she practiced intensively with Mboko and even alongside world No. 2 Elena Rybakina. They brought with them a contagious enthusiasm leading up to the event.
Williams’ eight-year-old daughter Olympia and Mboko had a touching moment during practice, highlighting the personal significance of this return for Williams. Olympia, donning a matching lilac attire, captured these moments, adding a personal touch to the event.
Fans queued fervently for a brief chance to watch Williams practice. Sarah, among many, cherished a wave from Williams, who maintained a modest presence despite the attention.
As the match commenced, fans witnessed 90 minutes of invigorating play. Williams and Mboko’s on-court camaraderie, coupled with strategic tennis discussions at intervals, underscored their partnership’s strength. The match concluded with Williams serving impeccably: two aces followed by an unreturned serve.
“It’s such a privilege to play beside you … We really did that out there,” Mboko stated, expressing her admiration for Williams during their post-match interview.
The spectators at Queen’s Club were treated to an impressive performance. Regardless of future outcomes, the return of their favorite player has reignited the passion and excitement among tennis fans, with Mboko playing a significant role in Williams’ successful return.
