The Chicago Cubs hoped playing at Coors Field might revive their struggling offense, but their performance against the Colorado Rockies Tuesday night fell short. In the series opener, the Cubs lost 7-3 as right-hander Colin Rea struggled early. He gave up five runs in the first two innings and ultimately allowed seven runs on nine hits, including two home runs, across 4 2/3 innings.
Manager Craig Counsell noted the team’s inability to capitalize on opportunities, saying, “We just didn’t do enough tonight. There were some balls well hit with men on base, but we didn’t catch any breaks, and you’ve got to make your own breaks.” Rea’s pitching lacked effectiveness, generating only five whiffs on 79 pitches. He struggled to control the zone, particularly with his four-seam fastball.
Despite having runners in scoring position, the Cubs went 0-for-8 and left eight on base. Their offensive inconsistencies have become evident, having scored three or fewer runs in four consecutive games. Michael Busch expressed frustration but emphasized the team’s belief in their hitters, stating, “Everybody’s a little frustrated. We keep putting pressure on the other team, but sometimes you come up big, and sometimes you come up short.”
Rockies pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano made mistakes that the Cubs failed to exploit, fouling off several pitches that were left over the middle of the zone. Counsell highlighted these missed opportunities as critical to improving their offense, asserting, “That’s offense, and that’s hitting, and we certainly have to do a better job with it.”
As the Cubs face challenges with their offensive production, Counsell remains focused on the potential for improvement. Despite the struggles, he remains optimistic, encouraging the team to start fresh each day. He stated, “There’s a lot of season in front of us, and a lot of good things can be in front of us, and that’s still how you have to show up every day.”
