Polling Dynamics in Georgia’s Republican Runoff
The race between Rick Jackson and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones has become more competitive. Initially, Jones had a lead with Donald Trump’s endorsement. However, a recent Cygnal poll shows Jackson now leading. Jones originally led the primary with 39% compared to Jackson’s 33%, pushing both to a runoff.
The Cygnal poll reveals significant shifts. On May 28, Jones led 41% to Jackson’s 38%. By June 7, Jackson’s support rose to 46%, while Jones dropped to 35%. The poll notes a dramatic change, with undecided voters’ leanings bringing Jackson’s lead to 12 points. First-choice support shifted from a three-point Jones lead to an 11-point Jackson lead.
On the combined ballot, Jones now trails with 44% to Jackson’s 56%. The memo noted that Jones has struggled to close this gap. Despite this, other surveys present varying results. A CivicLens Research poll gives Jones a 10-point lead over Jackson. This poll involved 700 likely voters with a margin of error of 4 points.
In contrast, a JMC Enterprises poll of 600 likely voters found Jackson leading by two points. The margin of error for this poll is also 4 points. Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket still favor Jones. As of Tuesday, Kalshi placed Jones’ odds at 58%, while Polymarket set them at 61%.
Georgia’s Political Landscape
Georgia remains a battleground, backing Trump in 2024 but holding Democratic U.S. Senate seats while Republicans govern the state. The general election will pit the Republican runoff winner against former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
Trump’s endorsements have significantly impacted Republican primaries. His influence resulted in the defeat of figures like Representative Thomas Massie and Senators Bill Cassidy and John Cornyn. Governor Brian Kemp, term-limited and previously at odds with Trump over the 2020 election, reconciled and backed Trump’s 2024 campaign.
