Deion Sanders: Overcoming Health Challenges and Ready for Football

1 week ago 0

Deion Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and the University of Colorado football coach, experienced a tougher health battle in recent years than any opponent in his career. Despite these challenges, he continues to emerge victorious.

In a recent interview, Sanders declared, “I got my life back. I got my swagger back.” He shared on “Good Morning America” that he is now cancer-free after facing blood clots and undergoing an aspiration thrombectomy. The procedure and its challenges did not dampen his spirit.

“I’m cancer free. I’m good,” Sanders announced. “Great doctors in Colorado have brought me through. God has brought me through. I’m thankful and healthy. I’m ready to coach my butt off and have a good time.” He emphasized that early detection played a crucial role in his recovery.

In 2023, blood clots necessitated surgery to improve circulation. Yet, last year, severe leg pain and returning clots required additional procedures. This all occurred before a 2025 diagnosis of aggressive bladder cancer, discovered during a routine vascular exam.

The cancer treatment included bladder removal, followed by reconstruction using part of his intestine. This led to a challenging adjustment period.

“Now you’re sitting in the room, don’t know what’s what,” Sanders said. “You got a whole new bladder. You’re peeing in the bed. I remember going to a speaking engagement and worrying if I had peed on myself.” These experiences turned into an opportunity as Sanders became a spokesman for Depend, a company providing adult incontinence products.

“I don’t have to be afraid to travel anymore,” Sanders noted. “I have the product that helps me.”

With health issues largely behind him, Sanders is ready to focus on a new challenge: coaching the Colorado Buffaloes in the upcoming season.

“Winning,” Sanders responded when asked about his current goals. “And I’m healthy. I got my health back. I got my swagger back. I got my me back. Last year at this time, I was fighting cancer. But now, I’m fully back.”
