President Donald Trump recently highlighted damage caused by vandals to the newly renovated reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial. Authorities are currently investigating this incident. Trump’s statements come as the pool faces issues related to peeling paint and algae growth following a $14.8 million restoration project.
Trump stated, “Things are really looking good in our Nation’s Capital, and add to that the fact that when I became President, Crime was rampant, and now, Washington, D.C., is one of the Safest Cities anywhere in the United States,” via Truth Social. He continued by noting that the reflecting pool, located between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, has experienced vandalism.
“Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed,” Trump said.
The vandals reportedly used chemicals similar to those historically used on the National Mall to damage the pool’s surface. They allegedly harmed the newly installed area surrounding the reflecting pool.
Recently, a large “86 47” message appeared etched into the grass between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial. Officials interpreted this as a threat, with “86” meaning to remove something and “47” referring to Trump as the 47th president.
The $14.8 million project was announced complete on June 6, but algae soon spread throughout the pool, obscuring parts of the “American flag blue” bottom. In response, the National Park Service and contractors used chemicals and ozone nanobubbles to manage the algae. A pool-style vacuum system helped remove algae from the pool’s bottom, with assurances from the Park Service that there were no adverse effects on marine life or the environment.
Trump mentioned that most algae had been cleared away and the vandalized area is set for repair. “The algae is 75% gone, and the condition will soon be completely remedied,” Trump said. He assured that the vandalism had occurred in a small area, which will be repaired shortly.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the incidents. Images shared on social media depict National Guard and U.S. Park Police officers monitoring the location. Criticism of the renovation and celebrations over algae growth have appeared in social media videos.
